The Beautiful and Elusive Lacebark Pine
|
A long time favorite plant in the UNL
East Campus landscape is lacebark pine (Pinus bungeana). The trunk of the tree shows a patchy variation
of white, gray and brown that is unrivaled for winter beauty. The hardest thing about growing lacebark
pine has always been finding a nursery that carried it. Finke Gardens is pleased to offer lacebark
pine this year. Lacebark pine should be treated as a specimen plant. Find a location that has some
protection from the scorching summer sun and drying winter winds. Lacebark is a fairly narrow tree
(15 to 20 feet) that grows only 40 feet in height. A mature specimen can be seen on UNL East Campus
just north of Love Coop (enter campus at 35th and Holdrege; this building is the first one on your
left).
