It is with great enthusiasm that we announce the inaugural Plant It Pink Campaign of Nebraska benefiting the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. Plant It Pink is a new campaign aimed at informing Nebraska residents about the need for advocacy in the fight against breast cancer and to raise the funds necessary for ACS CAN to continue its lifesaving work.

The work of ACS CAN is allowing thousands of women access to the lifesaving cancer screenings and treatments they need.

Drought symptoms are showing up on many trees, especially those planted within the last few years.  Customers have been calling in reporting leaves that are turning yellow, especially near the trunk, and dropping off.  “It looks like autumn in my back yard!” one distressed customer noted.  The tree is coping with the lack of moisture by slowing its growth and shedding some of it’s foliage.  Leaves may also simply wilt and take on a dull green color.

Before you go get the hose, take a minute to stick your finger in the soil around the tree.  Learn what dry soil feels like.  Then get the hose and let it run at a medium flow rate near the base of the tree for at least 30 minutes.  When finished there should be a puddle around the tree and the soil should be completely saturated.  This thorough soaking will hydrate the entire root system as well as the surrounding soil.  Continue to monitor the soil moisture by poking your finger into the soil at least two or three times weekly.  Only water the tree if the soil feels dry.  Also, do not rely on lawn irrigation systems to supply enough moisture to new trees and shrubs.  Coverage is typically shallow and uneven.

Finally, give the plant some time to recover.  Leaves may perk up overnight, but it will take several weeks for new foliage to appear and normal growth to resume.  If you have more questions, feel free to contact the staff at Finke Gardens.  We are glad to help!
