New in 2010 for Wet Soils

posted by finkegardens on March - 11 - 2010

Plants in this category will tolerate soils that range from consistently moist to intermittent flooding.  Some will even tolerate standing water.  Our staff can help you choose which will be best for your particular site.

Swamp Chestnut Oak
Quercus michauxii
Swamp Chestnut Oak is a southern native, but makes its home in Nebraska just as well.  It is a large rounded shade tree growing 50 to 60 feet high and wide.  It is native to river bottoms and other moist areas.  It is tolerant of wet soil in the landscape, but it may show chlorosis if planted in alkaline clay.  Let’s diversify our landscapes with another worthy over-story oak!

Overcup Oak
Quercus lyrata
Overcup Oak may well be one of the most worthwhile but under-planted trees out there.  Its name comes from the cap which almost completely covers the acorn.  The most noteworthy characteristic is its tolerance of wet soils.  In fact, it is native to river bottoms and is often found growing in standing water!  Let’s diversify our landscapes with this worthy over-story oak!  Grows 50 to 60 feet high and 40 to 50 feet wide.

Flamingo Box Elder Maple
Acer negundo ‘Flamingo’
Box Elder is a native tree known for its ability to tolerate harsh growing conditions.  ‘Flamingo’ is an improved version of an older variegated cultivar with better tolerance of heat and wind and more pink coloration in the leaves.  It does not sucker nearly as much and is more tolerant of alkaline soils.  For best performance though, plant this tree in good quality, moist soil with a bit of shade in the afternoon.  It will grow 25 to 35 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide.

Red Rage Blackgum
Nyssa sylvatica ‘Hayman Red’
Deep green, high gloss summer foliage turns outrageously bright red with the onset of fall weather.  Discovered in southern Indiana, it has all the great features of the species plus good resistance to leaf spot and dependably brilliant fall color!  Thrives in moist, well-drained soil but will struggle in heavy clay.  Its upright pyramidal shape makes it an excellent candidate for smaller urban yards.  Height is 30 to 40 feet with a spread of about 20 feet.

Debonair Pondcypress
Taxodium ascendens ‘Morris’
Debonair Pondcypress is a fast-growing deciduous conifer with a pyramidal form and soft, delicate, feathery texture.  It is a bit more formal and refined than seedling grown pond cypress, but has the same affinity for wet clay soil.  The soft green foliage turns to bronze-orange in fall.  Prefers full sun and will grow 50 to 60 feet high and 15 to 20 feet wide.

Peve Minaret Baldcypress
Taxodium distichum ‘Peve Minaret’
A naturally dwarf tree selected in the Netherlands, this selection forms a dense, compact spire with soft, rich-green foliage that begs to be touched.  The finely textured foliage, solid trunk and beautiful habit give the small tree the impression of great age, even when young.  Beautiful in a rock garden or near a water feature.  Loves wet soil!  The foliage changes to attractive red-brown in autumn and the leaves hold for several weeks before dropping.  Prefers full sun and grows 10 to 15 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide.
