August brings on some of our favorite seasonal bloomers, along with all the butterflies that share our opinion. It’s peak season for Buddleia and Hydrangeas, a great pairing to attract butterflies. Team them up with ornamental grasses, and you have a durable, sun-loving combination perfect for fall displays.

Limelight Hydrangea is a form of hydrangea that grows well in sun when it has plenty of moisture. Its bloom is slightly more chartreuse than the standard PeeGee hydrangea. Northwind Switchgrass will be comparable in height to the Limelight, and adds a great upright form and blue-green color that mimics the popular blue spruce. Add Goldbar Miscanthus, a shorter form of the variegated maidengrass for some contrasting foliage and your landscape has both color contrast and repetition.
The old fashion favorite Rose of Sharon is now available in many new colors. White Chiffon has single white flowers and grows 6 to 8 feet in height, a little shorter than the traditional plant. Here it is combined with Bruns Serbian Spruce, a smaller scale evergreen tree.
Tardiva Hydrangea is another durable form that grows well in both sun and part shade. Combined with the yellow foliage of Tiger Eye Sumac and the late summer-blooming First Choice Caryopteris, this 3 to 6 foot display repeats the popular color combination of Russian Sage and Goldsturm Rudbeckia.
